2003-2004 Mustang Results 12/2/03 Cibola With the East Valley Region expanding by one team (Cibola) and the elimination of the region tournament, the season would begin with an immediate leap into region play. The Mustangs would jump all over the Raiders in the first ten minutes of the match but unfortunately the goals just would not come. Not until the final two minutes of the half would Dobson get on the scoreboard. A terrific sequence of passes would lead to Meghan Holck putting the Mustangs up for good with the assist going to Tana Anderson. The second half would see the Mustangs squander chance after chance but goals from Nicky Morris and Alissa Oldenkamp would be the icing on the cake. Friday the Red Mountain Lady Lions come to Dobson and the offense better be ready for what should be an extremely important match. 12/5/03 Red Mountain In one of the most heated girl's soccer rivalries in the state, this game would not disappoint. Following three straight losses to Red Mountain dating back to the region tournament final of 2002, the Mustangs would come out fired up looking to end the streak. Early on the Mustangs showed signs of how good they could be this year by possessing the ball and dominating the 5th ranked team in the state. Dobson would be able to generate numerous chances to score but the Red Mountain defense just would not crack. As the game progressed, Red Mountain would settle down and show just how dangerous they can be. If not for the stellar play of goalkeeper Stephanie Jones, Dobson could have lost this game 2-0 but Stephanie was huge and thwarted every scoring chance the Mountain Lions would have. At the end of regulation and score tied at 0-0, both team looked exhausted but this would be a game decided by determination and perseverance. In the final overtime period, freshman Andrea Clark would block three clearances by the Red Mountain defense and finally get in on a breakaway. Andrea calmly beat the Red Mountain keeper and the Mustangs would hold on for the hard-fought 1-0 win. 12/8/03 Desert Mountain After the emotional roller coaster of a game Friday night, the Mustangs came out extremely flat and did not play up to their potential. Desert Mountain would take the lead for good midway through the first half and the Mustangs could never get their offense in gear. By far our worst game of the year but fortunately the season is still in it's infancy and I hope we can correct this lack of offense soon before it comes back to really hurt us. 12/9/03 Highland Not sure what has happened since Friday night. The team is struggling to play well and what little scoring we had has vanished. The lack of desire and determination is really disturbing because we can be one of the best teams in the state if we just choose to. Highland would open up the scoring just 90 seconds into the match as their outside midfielder was able to get in all alone and finish the ball as it was served in from the far side of the field. A penalty kick in the second half would give them a 2-0 lead and we could never cut into their lead. The intensity level in the second half would improve but things just seem to be going wrong right now. This group of young ladies has the intelligence and the ability to become a very good team but we're just going to have to stick with it and overcome this temporary obstacle. 12/10/03 Mountain Pointe This game would pit a Mountain Pointe squad that had already earned a birth in the Fiesta Bowl semifinals and a struggling Mustang squad. The Pride would open up the scoring in the 20th minute and the offensive woes would continue for Dobson. Playing without Alissa Oldenkamp the girls would play with a lot of heart and in the first 30 seconds of the second half Jessica Laurino would find Krista Mirabelli to tie the game. Both teams would have numerous chances to win the game but neither teams goalkeepers would be beaten and the game would go to penalty kicks to decide nothing. Dobson would come up on the short end of the kicks and now heads home to prepare for a big game on Monday against region rival Mountain View.12/15/03 Mountain View After a horrendous showing at the Fiesta Bowl tournament, the team worked extremely hard in training on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and it would show in this important region match-up. Dobson came out and played like they had something to prove to a Toro squad that had beaten the Mustangs twice last season. Freshman Andrea Clark would tally three goals on the evening and Alissa Oldenkamp and Kayla Poe would also score as the Mustangs would win the match 5-0 and has yet to be scored upon in region play. Oldenkamp would also notch two assists and Krista Mirabelli would also add two assists. Emily Ellsworth starting in her first match of the year would also add an assist. The defense played exceptional and Junior goalkeeper Monique Wells would be tremendous in goal until just before halftime when she would leave the game with a concussion. 12/18/03 Westwood Dobson would dominate the Warriors and with the win now leads idle Red Mountain by 6 points in the East Valley Region. Alena Ihle would finish the night with 2 goals and 4 assists. Andrea Clark would add two goals of her own and 7 other Mustangs would tally a goal for a final score of 11-1. The lone Westwood goal would come on a very questionable call in the second half that would lead to a penalty kick. Maura Chavez would collect the first goal of her Mustang career and Veronica Contreras would add a goal and three assists. The team looked very sharp and the game was really over by halftime. Dobson now takes a break until the start of the Dobson Tournament on December 29th.12/29/03 Marcos de Niza The Mustangs would open this years tournament by defeating a very feisty Marcos de Niza squad 4-0. Andrea Clark would notch her second hat-trick of the season and Alena Ihle would finish the scoring late in the second half. The defense played very well and will hopefully finish out pool play against Chandler without another goal. 12/30/03 Chandler In the final game of group play, the Mustangs would devastate the Wolves with a ferocious attack and take the first place seed that comes in group "D". Dobson would get two goals from Andrea Clark and Krista Mirabelli would notch her first hat-trick of the season while Stephanie Jones and Alena Ihle would each get a goal for their efforts. The defense was very solid until late in the second half when a minor break-down would result in a goal for the Wolves. Dobson must now prepare for the loser of group "A" which may be Mountain View or Catalina Foothills. 1/2/04 Mountain View The Mustangs arrived in the quarterfinals looking to continue their winning ways while taking on a very formidable opponent in region rival Mountain View. Alissa Oldenkamp would open up the scoring for the Mustangs early in the first half on a wonderfully placed ball by Andrea Clark. Alissa would tally another goal while Andrea would get two of her own. The defense was solid as usual and with Stephanie in goal the Mustangs would cruise into the semifinals against the winner of Red Mountain and Chaparral. Adrian Gora would receive two yellow cards and must now sit the next game. 1/2/04 Red Mountain In the semifinals of the Dobson Soccer Locker Invitational, the Red Mountain Mountain Lions came out to avenge an earlier 1-0 loss to the Mustangs. The Mustangs would come out a bit sluggish and the Mountain Lions were able to take a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on a very poor call which lead to a penalty kick. Stephanie almost came up with one of her patented saves but the ball was just out of her reach. The second half would not be very kind to Dobson as Red Mountain would score their second goal of the day and would cruise to the 2-0 victory. Dobson now must face a very good Gilbert team which lost 4-1 to Catalina Foothills in the other semi-final. 1/3/04 Gilbert The Mustangs would come out extremely flat against the team that knocked them out of the 2003 State Playoffs. Gilbert would get on the board late in the first half as a ball was sent through the middle of the field and a Gilbert attacker would get in behind the Dobson defense and squeeze the ball past Monique Wells. Dobson would come close to equalizing the match on a few occasions in the second half but to no avail. Dobson must now get ready for two region games this upcoming week against a very good Mesa team and the Skyline Coyotes. 1/5/04 Mesa Dobson came into the match having been shutout in their previous two matches and it was not until the 29th minute that the Mustangs would get on the scoreboard. Alissa Oldenkamp would tally the first goal of the night and shortly after Kayla Poe would notch the first of her two goals on the evening. Going into the intermission only up two, the Mustangs changed their strategy and began attacking the outside flanks of the Mesa defense. Freshman Christa Bitner would score two goals and also collect an assist while Adrian Gora would get the second goal of her Dobson career. Krista Mirabelli and Meghan Holck would round out the scoring. With the win, Dobson maintains control of first place in the East Valley Region. 1/9/04 Skyline The Mustangs traveled to East Mesa to take on conference foe Skyline and keep their slim lead over Red Mountain. It would take a while for Dobson to get on the scoreboard but the Skyline defense was no match for the Mustang offense. Alena Ihle would score the first of her three goals on the evening with the assist going to Alissa Oldenkamp. Alissa would rewrite the Dobson record book by assisting on seven goals tonight eclipsing the previous mark of five by Ashley Emmons in the 2001/2002 season and Callie Cheek in the 1994/1995 season . Alissa now needs two more assists to set the single season mark held by Lauren Thomas who tallied 21 assists during the 2001/2002 season. Emily Lundeen would score two second half goals and Catrina Garcia would get her second goal of the season. Denise Filley who was recently pulled up from Junior Varsity would get two goals as well. Sam Lipka who has played sparingly this year got the first goal of her young career and Veronica Contreras along with Krista Mirabelli would pick up the rest of the goals. As the first half of region play comes to an end, we are still in first place with an extremely important game against Red Mountain coming up this Wednesday. First though, the Mustangs must travel to Yuma to play the Cibola Raiders who have one of the region's best goalkeepers. 1/12/04 Cibola After some transportation problems, the Mustang teams arrived in Yuma ready to keep their slim lead in the East Valley Region. The Raiders have become one of the most physical teams in the conference and this was going to pose a problem for Dobson. Cibola had a good chance early on to take a 1-0 lead but the shot sailed just wide of the goal. Dobson would counter with a goal from Krista Mirabelli with the assist going to Alissa Oldenkamp. Krista would finish the evening with four goals and Alissa would notch a goal for herself as well as getting one more assist to break the school record for assists in a season. Alena Ihle would be on top of her game in the midfield and would get two goals and two assists. Denise Filley would collect three assists and was once again superb up top for us. Sara Freeman would get the first goal of her career on a terrific left-footed volley which had been served in by Emily Ellsworth. Luckily we were able to rest a lot of players and now must get ready for region rival Red Mountain who is looking to avenge a 1-0 loss earlier in the season. 1/14/04 Red Mountain The Mustangs would travel to Red Mountain to take on former assistant coach Heather Osborn's highly ranked Mountain Lion team for first place in the East Valley region. Red Mountain would strike first but with 5 seconds left in the half, Krista Mirabelli would equalize to take both teams into halftime tied 1-1. Alissa Oldenkamp would score the next goal to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead. Red Mountain would answer shortly later and tie the game up 2-2. Then with about 15 minutes left, Nicky Morris would score to give the Mustangs their final lead of the night. Playing like a top caliber team, the Mountain Lions would score on a penalty kick to tie the match. Neither team could find the back of the goal again and after 20 minutes of overtime the game was a draw. 1/16/04 Mountain View Dobson came into the match looking to wrap up the East Valley Region Championship against the only other team that had a real chance to catch them. The game would be different than the previous two meetings between these to region rivals. Mountain View came in extremely prepared for the Mustang offense and goalkeeper Carrie Brady would play very well. The Mustangs did a good job to possess the ball and generated some good scoring chances but nothing would end up in the back of the net. The second half would finally see the Mustangs get on the scoreboard as Andrea Clark would score yet again against the Toros. Dobson looked like a team playing it's third game of the week and was sluggish towards the end of the match as Mountain View would generate their best chances o the evening but goalkeeper Monique Wells would come up huge and notch another shutout. 1/20/04 Westwood The Warriors came into the match looking to improve on their previous result and would be extremely successful. Dobson would get on the scoreboard midway through the first half and would only take a 1-0 lead into halftime. The early stages of the second half would see the host Mustangs add two more goals before the offense took the rest of the evening off. Monique Wells would record her 6th shutout of the season. Alena Ihle, Krista Mirabelli and Andrea Clark would score the goals on the night for the Mustangs. 1/22/04 Mesa Dobson paid a visit on the Jackrabbits for senior night and the result was much like the first time when these two teams met in early January. Dobson would get on the scoreboard early and often and took a 4-0 lead into halftime. The second half would see the offense struggle a bit and the Jackrabbits would be able to score twice while the Mustangs would add three more to make the game 7-2. Mesa showed a lot of desire and even when the game seemed to be out of reach the girls from Mesa kept fighting until the very end. Alena Ihle and Krista Mirabelli would score twice for the Mustangs while Alissa Oldenkamp, Andrea Clark and Nicky Morris would each add a goal. 1/27/04 Corona del Sol Dobson would travel down the road to take on non-conference rival Corona del Sol who was ranked second in the state. Corona would apply constant pressure to the Mustangs but the Mustangs were up to the challenge and would take a 0-0 tie into halftime. The second half would not be as kind to the Mustangs and Corona would be able to score twice on corner-kicks to win the game 2-0. Dobson had their chances but the Aztec defense was able to turn away each scoring opportunity. The girls played exceptionally well but in the end the Aztecs were just too much. 1/29/04 Skyline In the final regular season game of the year and in the careers of this years seniors, the Mustangs would score early and often. Every senior would score at least one goal on the evening and Emily Lundeen would tally the first hat trick of her four year career. Rarely would the Mustangs be tested and three different keepers would share in the shutout. Dobson must now prepare to play Xavier Prep who should easily win their first round game Monday. The game will be at Dobson at 7pm following the boys game 5pm. The last time Dobson hosted Xavier, the Gators knocked the Mustangs out of the State Quarterfinals in 2000 so Dobson will be looking to get some revenge in a game that will pit two of the states best. 2/4/04 Xavier State Playoffs Second Round The Gators came into Dobson boasting the second ranked team in the state. Early on it looked like the Mustangs would be able to knock off the Gators but Xavier's Christine Mock would score a terrific goal when she got up above the Dobson defense and headed home the game winner off a free kick from outside the 18. Minutes later, the Mustangs would suffer a terrible breakdown and an own goal would put the Mustangs in a hole they could never get out of. Dobson would generate plenty of scoring chances but the Xavier defense would hold strong and end the Mustang's season. This years team accomplished a lot and I'm so grateful to have had the chance to coach these fine young women. |
