Dobson vs. Gilbert 11/27/00

Dobson 6 Gilbert 1

Dobson opened up the scoring in the 8th minute as Freshman Alissa Oldenkamp beat the Gilbert goalkeeper  for the first of her four goals on the evening. Two minutes later Gilbert would equalize as Junior Joy Alverez was able to beat Mustang keeper Deanna Celaya from 35 yards out off a free kick.  One minute later Oldenkamp scored her second goal of the night and the Mustangs would never look back.  Junior Lauren Thomas scored the 3rd goal of the match off of a corner kick in the 21st minute with the assist coming from Sophomore Kim Demilio.  Christina Shoffner would add the fourth goal with just 2:57 left in the first half.  In the second half the Mustangs would tally two more goals from Oldenkamp to open the season 1-0.  Gilbert falls to 0-1.

Horizon 3   Dobson 0

Horizon came to Mustang country and dispatched the Mustangs 3-0 behind the goal scoring of Junior sensation Caitlin Benyi.  Benyi was able to get in behind the Mustang defense in the 5th minute and tally the first of her two goals on the evening.  Mustang goalkeeper Deanna Celaya was able to keep the score close with 10 saves but the Mustangs were never able to penetrate the Huskies defense.  Dobson will look to rebound against Mountain Ridge this Saturday at 2pm.

Dobson 1  Mountain Ridge 0

Dobson rebounded from it's loss against Horizon with a hard fought 1-0 victory over the Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions at Mustang Stadium.  Kaylan Olds starting in place of injured goalkeeper Deanna Celaya recorded the first shutout of the season for the Mustangs.  Stacy Anderson scored the match winner with 32 minutes remaining in the game.  Dobson improves to 2-1 on the season.

Dobson 4  Marcos de Niza 1

Dobson opened up play in the Fiesta Bowl Tournament by dispatching the Padres 4-1.  In the first half the Mustangs were able to find the back of the net as Alissa Oldenkamp beat several defenders and scored in the 14th minute.  Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the Padres were able to answer only 4 minutes later on a goal by Marlina Fletcher.  The Mustangs went into halftime tied for the second straight match but were determined to get things going in the second half.  Just 6 minutes into the half Christine Shoffner tallied her second goal of the year with the assists going to Anderson and Oldenkamp.  Only six minutes would elapse before the Mustangs would strike again.  This time Stacy Anderson beat several defenders and buried the ball past the Padre keeper.  The final goal of the evening would belong to Kim Demilio off of a beautiful cross from Oldenkamp.  Kaylan Olds filled in goal for the second straight match for the injured Deanna Celaya and tallied 10saves.

Corona del Sol 3  Dobson 2

Dobson came out strong in the second half to take the lead 1-0 behind Kim Demilio's second goal of the season.  Shortly after though, Corona was able to tie the match.  Corona would go up 2-1 but Lauren Thomas was able to tie the match with a free kick late in the half.  With just two minutes remaining Corona scored the game winner.  Kaylan Olds finished the match with 13 saves.  Christine Shoffner had to leave the game with 5:15 remaining in the first half after colliding with a Corona defender and possibly breaking her leg.  The Mustangs will look to rebound Thursday with a match against defending state champion Xavier.  Kick-off is set for 4:00pm at the Tempe Sports Complex.

Xavier 2  Dobson 0

Dobson came out against the defending state champs and showed that they are one of the top teams to beat.  With the score knotted at zero at half, the Mustangs were looking to advance to the semifinals of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament but Xavier would have nothing to do with that.  Xavier found the back of the net twice while turning aside all nine of the Mustangs shots.  For the first time in school history, the Mustangs will not be present in the semifinals of this tournament.  Deanna Celaya was solid in the net and superb play was accomplished by the entire team.  With a 9 day break before their next match, the Mustangs will look to improve their play defensively and get some players healthy before the rematch with Xavier on December 15th.

Xavier 2  Dobson 1

Dobson brought it's #8 ranking into Xavier to face the #2 team in the state.  Xavier opened up the scoring by slotting a ball past Mustang keeper Deanna Celaya; who would end up with nine save on the night, for their first goal.  Dobson would counter with a goal by Junior Brooke Banister to tie the match at one.  Xavier was able to once again spring into the attack and find the back of the net to take the lead 2-1 just before half-time.  Both teams battled constantly for the final 40 minutes but it just wasn't meant to be on this evening for the Mustangs.  A fantastic performance was turned in by all the Mustangs and there was definite improvement from their last match with Xavier.  Dobson will return home to face region foe Red Mountain on Wednesday December 20th at 6pm.

Dobson 4  Red Mountain 1

Dobson opened up region play with a commanding 4-1 win over rival Red Mountain.  The Mustangs outshot the Mountain Lions 27-5 and dominated almost every aspect of play on the evening while both Coach Johnson and Coach Carpenter sat out the match due to questionable ejections received in the Xavier match.  Lauren Thomas scored the first goal of the evening with the assist going to Stacy Anderson.  Anderson would then tally a goal of her own with the assist going to Thomas.  Kim Demilio and Cassandra Acosta would add the third and fourth goals while Alissa Oldenkamp and Sarah Ellsworth picked up the assists.  Deanna Celaya was only beaten once and picked up four saves on the evening.  Dobson is off until January 2nd when they will take on Seton Catholic in the Opening round of the Soccer Locker Dobson Invitational.

Dobson 3  Seton Catholic 0

Seton Catholic came into the game missing one of the best players in the state and it showed.  The Sentinels were able to get off many shots but none that tested Senior keeper Deanna Celaya.  Celaya would end up with five saves on the day for her first shutout of the season.  Stacy Anderson opened the scoring in the 46th minute off a corner kick by Lauren Thomas.  The goal was the 600th in the programs young history.  Anderson would tally one more while Freshman Alissa Oldenkamp would get one for herself in the 72nd minute.  Dobson advances to the second round of the Mustang Soccer Locker Tournament and will face Mountain Pointe at 12:00pm at Red Mountain Soccer Complex on Wednesday.

Dobson 2  Mountain Pointe 0

The Mustang defense shutout the Pride to post back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season.  The Mustangs have now held their opponents scoreless for over the past 220 minutes.  Kaylan Olds started in the goal for the Mustangs as Deanna Celaya took the day off to nurse a bad hip.  Alissa Oldenkamp would score the first goal of the match in the 24th minute to give Dobson the lead 1-0.  The Mustangs would have many more chances in the second half but were not able to convert until Alissa Oldenkamp scored her second goal of the match late in the game to seal the win for the Mustangs.  With the win, the Mustangs advance to the semifinals of the Mustang Soccer Locker Holiday Tournament and face Canyon del Oro at 12:00pm this Thursday.

Canyon del Oro 1  Dobson 0

C.D.O. scored the game winner in the 62nd minute off a free kick from just outside the penalty area.  The Dobson defense was once again stellar and the team was very entertaining to watch as the Mustangs sliced apart the C.D.O. defense time and time again.  Unfortunately the Mustangs could not finish any of their scoring chances and will now be playing Chaparrel for 3rd place on Friday at noon.

Dobson 3  Chaparrel 2

The Mustangs came out ready to play in the 3rd place match of the Mustang Soccer Locker Holiday invitational Tournament against 4A power Chaparrel.  Stacy Anderson opened up the scoring in the 13th minute off a corner kick taken by Ashley Emmons.  Nine minutes later Emmons would tally her first goal of the season off of a beautiful cross from Christine Shoffner  in the 22nd minute.  As the Firebirds were still wondering what had just hit them, Shoffner would score what would prove to be the match winner off the assist of Oldenkamp.  The Firebirds came out in the second half with a new keeper and a desire that was not evident in the first half.  After a goal in the 51st minute the Firebirds picked up their play even more and pushed the Mustangs nearly to overtime.  A penalty kick in the 65th minute would be the end of their scoring for the day thanks in part to goalkeeper Kaylan Olds who turned away four breakaways including one in the final minute to secure the win.  Dobson will be looking to avenge it's loss to mountain View last year this Wednesday at Mustang Stadium.  Game time is slated for 6pm.

Dobson 2 Mountain View 0

The Mustangs did indeed come out and avenge their loss to Mountain View from the previous year.  Dobson dominated most of the play and outshot the Toros 32-10.  Stacy Anderson opened up the scoring in the 26th minute off of a pass from Alissa Oldenkamp.  It would only take the Mustangs 7 minutes into the second half to score their second goal of the evening.  Kaylan Olds found the back of the net for her first goal of the season with the assist once again going to Oldenkamp.  Deanna Celaya was solid in the net and recorded her second shutout of the season.  Lauren Thomas was extremely detrimental to the Toro attack as she shut down the Toro's Shawna Cozens for most of the match.  With the win the Mustangs improve to 8-5 on the season and 2-0 in region play.

Desert Mountain 2 Dobson 1

Dobson encountered more than bad weather in their third match in East Valley Region play.  The Desert Mountain Wolves showed why they are one of the best teams in the state by capitalizing on a Mustang mistake in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into half-time.  The second half saw the Mustangs come out and play with more heart and desire but a flurry of shots in the first five minutes of the second half could not beat the Wolves keeper and the Wolves would score the game winner shortly thereafter.  With play going both ways the Mustangs mounted one last assault and scored by far their best goal of the year.  Alissa Oldenkamp beat a Desert Mountain defender and served a beautiful ball to Stacy Anderson who made a fantastic diving header and beat the opposing keeper to the far post.  Deanna Celaya was credited with 12 saves while the Mustangs combined for 21 shots on the night.  Ashley Murphy and the rest of the defense did an excellent job in containing the potent Wolves for most of the match.

Dobson 7 Mesa 0

Dobson celebrated senior night by erupting for 7 goals against region rival Mesa and secured a birth in the state playoffs.  Stacy Anderson began the onslaught just 15 seconds into the match off of a cross from Ashley Emmons.  Shortly after, Alissa Oldenkamp would score the first of her three goals on the evening with the assists going to Anderson and Emmons.  Anderson would finish the night with two goals and three assists.  Alyssa Shangraw would also tally a goal and an assist for the host Mustangs on this special evening.  Junior midfielder Lauren Thomas would also add an assist while Senior sweeper Ashley Murphy would score her second goal of her four-year career.  Senior goalkeeper Deanna Celaya would record three saves and post her third shutout of the season.  Dobson will wrap up region play this Friday at Westwood at 6 pm.

Dobson 10 Westwood 0

Dobson entered the match having already secured the regions 2nd seed in next weeks playoffs and used the Westwood game to tune-up for the playoffs.  Dobson outshot the Warriors 56-1 on the evening.  Surprise scoring came from Senior Lindsey Kahler and Deanna Celaya who had never registered a goal in their previous three years on the team found the back of the net this evening.  Stacy Anderson added two goals of her own in addition to her four assists.  Alissa Oldenkamp tallied a goal and two assists as well.  Dobson will host the 2nd round of the East Valley Region playoffs this Wednesday evening at 6pm.

Dobson 5 Mountain View 0

The Mustangs struck early and never looked back as they destroyed the Toros in this second round match.  With the loss, the Toros must travel to Tucson on monday to take on the second seed from the South Region.  Dobson advances to the finals of the East Valley Region Tournament where they will take on Desert Mountain at 6:00pm.  Alissa Oldenkamp who was named the Player of the Year for the East Valley Region on Tuesday evening opened up the scoring in the third minute.  Shortly after, Stacy Anderson scored the first of her three goals on the evening.  Lauren Thomas provided a goal of her own and Deanna Celaya was never really tested in the goal.  Anderson, Oldenkamp, Celaya and Thomas were all named to the first team for the East Valley All-Region team.  On the second team were Ashley Emmons, Ashley Murphy and Lindsey Kahler.  Honorable Mention awards were given to Katie Himmerick, Kim Demilio and Kaylan Olds.  Congratulations to these young women and their teammates for helping them to be recognized by the region's Head Coaches.

Desert Mountain 3 Dobson 2

In the championship match with the East Valley Region #1 seed on the line the Wolves of Desert Mountain came out on top.  Desert Mountain was up 2-0 at the half before the Mustangs decided to show up and play.  After goals by Ashley Emmons and Stacy Anderson tied the match, the Wolves were able to capitalize on a long throw-in that would be inadvertently scored by the Mustangs themselves.  Then with only five minutes remaining in the game Christine Shoffner was ejected and things looked bleak for the Mustangs.  But with a free kick from 45 yards out and only five seconds on the clock the Mustangs thought that they had scored the match tying goal only to have it waived off by an official who must have just found his whistle.  The call was a suspect offsides that would end the Mustangs day.  The girls showed an exceptional amount of heart and character in coming back and now they will look to rebound from the loss this Tuesday at Dobson in the first round of the state playoffs.  The game is slated for 6pm and the opponent will be the 3rd seed from the South Region.

Dobson 3 Flowing Wells 0

Dobson demonstrated from the opening kick-off the type of night it was going to be for Flowing Wells.  Flowing Wells could not contain the Dobson offense and with fantastic play from the defense and Deanna Celaya  the game would not be in question for long.  The center official felt that the game was a bit too lopsided so he awarded a very questionable penalty kick early in the second half to try and make the game a bit more interesting.  The "Soccer Gods" did not agree with the call and the ensuing kick would rattle off the crossbar.  Stacy Anderson kept up her scoring streak by lending a hand in two of the three Mustang goals on the evening.  Oldenkamp would tally the first goal while Ashley Emmons would wrap up the first half with a goal of her own.  Midway through the second half, Lauren Thomas lobbed a ball into the upper corner for the third and final goal.  Flowing Wells was without their starting goalkeeper who was sitting out the match with a severe medical condition.  Dobson now travels to Ironwood this Wednesday in the second round of the state playoffs.  The game time is slated for 7:00pm

Ironwood 2 Dobson 1

Both teams came out a bit tentative in this second round match of the 2001 Arizona State Playoffs.  Dobson's Kaylan Olds would score the first goal of the match 13 minutes in off a loose ball scramble in front of the goal.  Ironwood began employing different defensive strategies and finally found one that would contain the Dobson attack.  The Eagles would tie the game because of a brief defensive laps that allowed an unmarked Ironwood player to get behind the defense after a cleared corner kick.  Then with only 36 seconds remaining in the half, the Eagle Adria Barchi would take the ball near midfield and beat two Mustang defenders on her way to the match winning goal.  Ironwood advances to face Yuma this Friday while the Mustangs bid farewell to their Seniors: Stacy Anderson, Ashley Murphy, Deanna Celaya, Sara Grass and Lindsey Kahler.  We will miss these young ladies very much and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.
