It has been brought to my attention that having people vote on best and worst official is some kind of A.I.A. violation.  So these winners have been removed from the Year End Awards as well as the Athletic Directors viewed as the least "soccer-friendly" by the readers.  I guess this web site has now earned News Media status by the AIA.

The following brackets for the 5A tournaments were created for fun.  Each team was seeded based upon their ranking with us and where we would have seeded them if we had the honor of doing so instead of a blind draw that the A.I.A. uses.  Our goal was to create a bracket in which the top teams have the best chance to advance based upon how they would have been ranked.  Overall record is not as important as how each team did against the top teams in the state as perceived by the coaches.  If you are unhappy with where your team is seeded, ask your coach if they ever vote in the weekly top 10 poll.

5A Finals Review by Coach Jaime

Girls: Desert Vista 1- Xavier 0

The first 25 minutes was all Xavier. They controlled the run of play but created only a few half chances. While controlling the tempo, they were never dangerous. In the 26th minute, Desert Vista had a set piece about 25 yards out. Lea Mackinnon  chipped the ball over the wall to Katie Sheppard who found the net. That was all Desert Vista needed. The remainder of the half was played in the midfield with The Thunder going into the half time break up one. During the second half everyone expected D.V. to come out in low pressure, but that was not the case.  They came out attacking and created a number of opportunities but did not cash in. Xavier continued to sit back and only attack with 2 or 3 players. The only danger they created was off of the long throw or corners, but Thunder GK Amanda Maes was off her line, catching and punching the ball out of harms way. With 5 minutes remaining Xavier finally went to three strikers but with only 3 minutes left, a D.V. counter attack led to a PK. The PK was missed and Xavier had life. With 8 seconds left and the clock stopped, they had one last long throw to draw even but the throw sailed over the goal and sealed their fate. Congrats to Coach Bill Bohach and The Desert Vista Thunder for being The Class 5A Girls State Champions!

Boys Final: Desert Vista 1- Red Mountain 0

What a finish! The first few minutes Desert Vista created two great chances, the first by Reid Schmitt, a ripper off of the post and a sitter by Nick Auditore, which was saved by Ryan Vickery, but  things settled down. After 75 minutes of midfield battle the game exploded. A
cleared ball by Red Mountain bounced out to Reid Schmitt who was 35 yards out. He wasted no time in blasting a volley over Vickery into the upper corner of the goal to give The Thunder a lead with less than two minutes remaining. What a goal, what a celebration. Desert Vista held on to claim their second 5A Boys State Title in four years. These the moments we all play for and which the players will remember for ever. Thumbs up go to Vickery and Red Mountain for their run as well. They deserved to be in this game and played well, but Head Coach Mike Rabasca prepared his boys well and they came through. Great job!

Thank you for keeping up with me through out the state tournament and I look forward to contributing more to this great service to our kids, socceraz.com!

Blame lumped on Sereno

Article by AZ Republic

Pay very close attention to the total scholarship amount awarded.  $2,016,000 divided by the 23 players comes out to $87652.17 per player.  The article implies that each player was awarded a four year scholarship but NCAA rules limit scholarships to yearly amounts.  There is no such thing as a four-year athletic scholarship.  Feel free to contact any state university for more information.
